The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a grass roots organization whose purpose is to improve conditions for persons with mental illness.

Seeking and promoting effective and adequate professional treatment, appropriate support programs, housing, vocational training, and financial aid.
Seeking and promoting research into causes and treatment.
Seeking and promoting public education to reduce and eliminate discrimination and stigma
Promoting awareness of and involvement in pertinent legislation at all levels of Government.

About NAMI DeKalb, Kane-South & Kendall Counties (NAMI DKK)
Our NAMI affiliate was formed in the mid 1990's by a group of dedicated individuals who endeavored to promote the welfare of person with chronic mental illness and to support their families.
SUPPORT: Solutions to common problems are explored at "caring and sharing" meetings. NAMI DKK currently has two support groups meeting in Kane and DeKalb Counties.
EDUCATION: Special education programs, newsletters, books and videos, are just several of the opportunities sponsored by NAMI DKK.
Check this sight for information regarding Family-to-Family and Visions for Tomorrow classes. These and several new initiatives will be available in the near future. Also, educational sessions are presented periodically throughout the year in all three counties.
RESEARCH: The 1990's were the "Decade of the Brain" which signaled the importance (finally) of treating prolonged mental illnesses and brain disorders with biological components. NAMI promotes and supports continuing mental illness research.
ADVOCACY: NAMI works to protect the rights of the chronically mental ill to provide mental health services and support for them and their families possible. Our efforts are primarily in the legislative arena on the local, state, and federal government.
