Get into the holiday spirit at the Lincoln Square Christkindl Market, Friday, Dec. 3, through Sunday, Dec. 5, at the intersection of North Lincoln Ave. and Leland Ave. The event has been recognized by 47th Ward Alderman Eugene Schulter as the cultural event of the year.

Christkindl Market Shoe Drive
More than 200 children from St. Matthias School and two classes from Queen of Angels school kicked off the Christkindl Market Shoe Drive on Nov. 23. The temperature was cold, just over 30 degrees, but the children's spirit of giving and a cup of hot chocolate, provided by Julius Meinl, kept them warm. Bags and bags of gently-used were dropped off at the Big Shoe on Giddings Plaza. 47th Ward Alderman Gene Schulter, Melissa Flynn, executive director of the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce and Fr. John Sanaghan, St. Matthias pastor, and Ronald McDonald invited everyone to attend the 3rd Annual Christkindl Market. The Shoe Drive runs through Dec. 17.

Whitney Young High School Freshman Melanie Balanontaught the 6th grade science class about obesity and nutrition on Nov. 11.The 2010 St. Matthias TransfigurationAlumna was working on asemester project forher biology class, and chose to do a community outreach project.
"With the rising epidemic of childhood obesity, knowing more about it will hopefully decrease the obesity rates, "Balanon said. "Mylesson included a PowerPoint presentation, a worksheet for the students to fill out during the presentation, and an interactive quiz game that the students played in groups.They learned about obesity statistics, the food pyramid, obesity consequences and prevention, fitness, and the benefits of being at a healthy weight."
"It was great to be back at Matthias," she said. "It feels like I never left."
Of Melanie's 21 classmates,nine were accepted at a selective enrollment high schools.
Other students chose to attend Northside College Prep,WalterPayton, LaneTech Prep, Lincoln Park High School and Northtown Charter.Still others selectedCatholic High Schools including Notre Dame High School, Resurrection High School, Loyola and Gordon Tech.
