Don't Forget Your Pet Needs Dental Care, Too!
The Pets Need Dental Care, Too campaign (www.petdental.com) is designed to educate pet owners on the need and importance of proper dental care to help maintain the overall wellness of their pets. It is estimated that nearly 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease by 3 years of age.
Periodontal (gum)disease is the most common disease of cats and dogs (man as well) and is an infection caused by the buildup of soft dental plaque (bacterial and food debris) on the surface of the teeth at the gum line. The bacteria in the plaque irritate the gum tissue and can lead to infection of the bone and supporting structures that surround and anchor the teeth. Calcium salts in the pets saliva become deposited and combine with the plaque to form a difficult to remove hard substance called tarter (calculus). Bad breath, reddened (inflamed) swollen gums and the presence of yellow- brown tarter along the tooth and gum line are indications of periodontal disease in your pet. In more advanced cases signs might include bleeding gums, loose or broken teeth , mouth pain or loss of appetite.
The bacteria surrounding the tooth roots may enter the blood stream and cause or contribute to potentially serious systemic infections and complications to the heart, kidneys and liver. Prevention and management of periodontal disease begins with home care with daily brushing of the teeth and the feeding of diets and treats that are designed to help reduce tarter accumulation (see Veterinary Oral Health Council seal of acceptance products www.vohc.org), regular veterinary checkups to access your pets mouth as well as overall health status and professional dental cleaning when indicated to remove the plaque and tarter build up. A dental cleaning is a procedure that requires general anesthesia so the plaque and tarter can be thoroughly removed from the tooth and adjacent gum (gingival) surfaces by scraping and the use of a ultrasonic cleaner followed by smoothing the tooth surfaces with a polisher. In some cases there might be the need for dental radiographs to access the roots and bone surrounding a tooth and/or teeth extractions . Referral to a veterinary dental specialist (www.avdc.org) for further care may be recommended in certain situations. We recognize that owners are apprehensive about the idea of having their pet placed under anesthesia but with the proper pre- surgical evaluation (blood tests, physical examination etc) and appropriate anesthetic protocol and monitoring the benefits far outweigh the minimal associated risks. We perform our dental cleanings on a scheduled basis Monday through Friday mornings year round.
If you believe your pet is exhibiting signs of periodontal disease call our office (815-338- 0132) to schedule a dental cleaning. If you are uncertain or have further questions we will be happy to schedule an office visit and have one of our veterinarians evaluate and discuss your pets needs

Microchip Your Pet For Safety and Security
Having your pet microchipped is an easy way of increasing the odds that your pet can be identified and returned to you in the event that it runs away, becomes lost or is stolen. Lost or stray animals brought to shelters, animal controls or veterinarians are routinely scanned for the presence of a microchip. The chip is simply injected under the skin thru a hypodermic needle where it remains safely for life. Pets that are microchipped are eligible for a discount when Rabies licenses are purchased in McHenry County. Contact our office for more information concerning the Avid FriendChip microchip.
Pet Insurance Offers Affordable, Quality Pet Health Care
Part of the realty of owning a pet are the expenses associated with feeding and providing basic veterinary care. These costs are not insignificant but for most owners are usually manageable. This may not be the case when your pet unexpectedly becomes sick or injured. In these cases treatment costs can mount rapidlysometimes forcing the owner to decline treatment because they simply can not afford it at the time.

Pet Insurance (for example V.P.I- Veterinary Pet insurance) can provide a way of helping the pet owner cope with these situations by covering a significant portion of the costs once a deductible has been reached very similar to health insurance for people. There are a number of pet policies available with some significant differences so the pet owner needs to study each offering very carefully. All policies allow you to go to any veterinarian that you choose, have annual premiums, variable deductibles and maximum coverage limits; some have exclusions such as congenital conditions and preexisting conditions, provide for well care (such as neutering, dentals and annual vaccinations), extended cancer care in addition to the typical accident/emergency coverage.

We believe pet health insurance allows us to offer and provide the pet owner the best care possible for their pet while helping to make it more affordable. Feel free to contact us for more information and resources.
