“Empowering Lives Through Martial Arts.”
We hope to provide for our students, both children and adults, challenging and stimulating well-rounded martial arts training that increases self-esteem, confidence, physical fitness, self-awareness, and the ability to defend oneself from others.
The form of martial art taught by Lake Zurich Family Martial Arts benefits students through four primary ways: physical fitness, Tae Kwon Do basics, forms, and self-defense.
Through the various martial arts exercises and drills, physical fitness is stressed and developed in many ways. Cardiovascular fitness is developed through high-intensity aerobic exercises, muscular strength is promoted through exercises such as push-ups, crunches, and martial arts techniques such as punches and kicks, and overall endurance is improved through strenuous 45 to 90 minute classes.
The basic punching and kicking techniques of Tae Kwon Do encourage basic body awareness, coordination, balance, and eye-hand and eye-foot coordination.
Through the learning and practice of empty-hand forms (sequences of techniques learned for each rank), the student learns discipline, self-control, body awareness, and memory.
Self-defense helps students learn confidence and responsibility. While self-defense techniques can be violent, the proper and legal use of such techniques only in self-defense is emphasized. Learning and practicing self-defense skills are incredibly beneficial even if never used for actual self-defense.
For children in particular, the martial arts foster self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of achievement as they move through the ranks. Unlike sport-oriented martial arts and other sports, the martial arts emphasize self-improvement over competition with other children.
Adults benefit particularly from the martial arts through increased fitness, flexibility, stress release, and self-defense.
Remember: the goal of the martial arts lies neither in victory nor in defeat but in the perfection of the character of its participants.
