Dia De Muertos~~Day of the Dead
Family Service is partnering with Zion Lutheran Church’s Community Service Group and Christ United Methodist Church along with volunteers from Faith in Action to host traditional Dia De Muertos celebrations.
In most regions of Mexico, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated on November 2nd. People go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing the favorite food s and beverages, memorabilia and photos of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and comments of living loved ones. Celebrations take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and share stories.
The celebration begins with a group of volunteers constructing an Altar in the Great Room at Zion in Deerfield. (10 Deerfield Road) The altar, built on Thursday, October 28th will include an arch, paper flowers and traditional decorations. The Altar will be on display through Sunday, November 7th. The public is invited and encouraged to visit. Please call the church for viewing hours (847-945-2009) The celebration concludes with a dinner for Latino Seniors on Sunday, November 7th from 5-8 PM. Traditional food will be served. The evening also includes traditional Mexican music and dancing. Family Service’s partnership with the churches and other community groups is serving as a catalyst in bringing generations and cultures together. Watch the website for photos!
Volunteers are needed to drive seniors to/from Highwood, and set up & clean up.
