About Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine has a 5000 thousand year old history. It includes Chinese herbs and acupuncture that have helped many people through the millenia. According to theories of traditional Chinese medicine, diseases are result of imbalanced yin and yang and disturbed qi and blood. The fundamental principle of treatment is to balance yin and yang and regulate qi and blood.
Chinese herbs were developed from food. Early in history, the Chinese began to explore the function of food and medications. The saying “Traditional Chinese medicine and diet both originate from the practice and experience in daily life." The earliest herbs appeared in books was in 1100 B.C. and earliest herbal book was written in 200 A. D. Many years after the Ming dynasty (1518-1593AD), the famous Chinese herbalist Li Shizhen wrote an herbal book that contained thousands of herbs and every herb’s function and toxicity, it became the herbal bible.
Chinese herbs can be used as single or combined in formulas, depending on each individual's condition (or conditions). The physician has to obtain all of the health information in order to make the right diagnosis and then prescribe the appropriate herbal formula for the patient.

Acupuncture is a technique that uses needles inserted in acupuncture points. Manipulating the needles regulates the qi in the human body that helps it heal it self. The Chinese believe that the cause for all disorders is when qi is disturbed and blocked. The needles help to open the channels and meridians where energy flows.

As early as the Stone Age in China, people used Bian stones, the earliest acupuncture instrument, to treat diseases. Later, bone and bamboo needles appeared. After metal casting techniques were developed, people began to use metal needles, such as bronze, iron, gold and silver ones. At present, disposable stainless needles are widely used.
