As one of the oldest congregations in Chicago, Temple Sholom is a vibrant and spiritual Reform Jewish community.

We strive to educate and inspire children, youth and adults to participate actively in worship, Torah study and Jewish life experience, and to put Reform Jewish religious and ethical principles into action.

We seek to enrich the lives of our members, contribute to the continuance and vitality of the Jewish people, and work in pursuit of Tikkun Olam to help "repair the world."

Temple Sholom Presents Capturing Holiness"

An Exhibit of Photography based on Torah Text by Stewart Cherlin
in the Mendelson Gallery

Special Wine & Cheese Reception, Friday October 29, Musical Shabbat Service with Cantor Katzman at 6:15 p.m. Mr. Cherlin, a Chicago area artist, creates a unique world of visual commentary through the media of digital photography. The exhibit at Temple Sholom features an array of recent works, many based on Torah text and music themes. The computer is Cherlin's darkroom and studio. He uses it as a creative tool to compose his artwork. He integrates layers upon layers of images to build each work, often creating variations as the work progresses. Cherlins artwork was recently featured on the cover of JUFNews (The Jewish Federation of Chicagos Monthly Magazine). An extensive catalog of Stewarts artwork can be viewed online at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stewartcherlin.

Thursday, Dec 2, 11:00 a.m. Ford's debut concerns Henry Lee, a Chinese-American in Seattle who, in 1986, has just lost his wife to cancer. After Henry hears that the belongings of Japanese immigrants interned during WWII have been found in the basement of the Panama Hotel, the narrative shuttles between 1986 and the 1940s in a story that chronicles the losses of old age and the bewilderment of youth. Henry recalls the difficulties of life in America during WWII, when he and his Japanese-American school friend, Keiko, wandered through wartime Seattle. Keiko and her family are later interned in a camp, and Henry, horrified by America's anti-Japanese hysteria, is further conflicted because of his Chinese father's anti-Japanese sentiment. The book continues as Henry's adult life and difficulty communicating with his college-age son, Marty, is compared with his alienation from his own father, who was determined to Americanize him.

For information about this month and future Morning Book Club meetings, contact Libbi Isaac at 773-281-4145.
