Honoring the Peacemakers — Local and Global
Two special individuals were recently awarded our coveted Peacemaker Award. Roi Norber, 4th grader and brown belt in Seido karate, earned his award by bravely speaking up when a group of older girls harassed his male friend for having painted toenails. Roi had to repeat his "boundary setting" message several times, but eventually it worked, and the problem was solved without anyone being hurt.
Betsy Fuchs, TW alumni and member of the Beth Emet Free Synagogue in Evanston earned her award for her work with the Compassionate Listening project. The group organizes delegations to visit Israel and the West Bank to speak with Israelis and Palestinians about the conflict there, and to practice listening "from the heart" as a way to stay open to people whose point of view is different and challenging. Betsy makes free public presentations about the Compassionate Listening technique to Chicago audiences, which was how she came to be a featured presenter in our Meditations on Activism public discussion series.
By awarding Roi and Betsy the Peacemaker Award, we honor their courage, commitment and hard work to interrupt violence and their willingness to stand as allies with others who are targeted.
