Established lawns do NOT need supplemental watering. Even though the grass blades are not growing, the roots are vigorously growing now.
Established gardens will need a final deep watering before going dormant over the next few weeks.
Provide a deep watering to existing and newly planted trees & shrubs--especially evergreens. As long as the tree or shrub has leaves and daytime temperatures are above freezing, consider a weekly deep watering to fortify the plant for winter.
Newly installed rain gardens do not need watering (except for shrubs, which should receive a deep watering as long as the plant has leaves).
For newly installed sod, now is the time to watch out for potentially OVER watering. Water every other day, and take precautions to prevent "squishy" conditions. Recent rains were not sufficient.
