Bramer Animal Hospital provides veterinary service to Evanston, IL and the surrounding areas of Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glenview, Rogers Park, West Rogers Park, West Ridge, Edgewater, Lincoln Square, North Park, and Uptown. We are an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) certified hospital and have been so since 1939. AAHA is dedicated to establishing and maintaining the highest standards in veterinary medical and surgical care. We are routinely evaluated by trained professionals who insure our compliance with these standards. Again in 2007, after a rigorous inspection process, We have achieved re-certification for the next 3 years which is the highest level recognized by AAHA. Canine Influenza Information
With much discussion about human influenze (flu) it is interesting to note that there exists a canine influenza virus also. It is not transmissible to humans, but there seems to be a fair amount of confusion as to whether one should vaccinate one's dog for this problem or not. Currently we are recommending you wait on this. Please read our position on this current topic in preventive medicine... (Download - 88Kb - )

Distemper-Hepatitis-Parvo (every 3 years)
Bordetella (kennel cough) Required by dog parks, dog beaches, daycare and boarding facilities (requirements vary from yearly to every 6 months)
Leptospirosis (yearly and recommended especially for the same group of dogs that get the Bordetella vaccination)

Fecal Examination for intestinal parasites (required by dog parks, dog beaches and many daycare facilities) is recommended annually.
Heartworm Screening is recommended annually.

If you frequent dog parks, dog beaches, daycare and/or boarding facilities, there may be an increased risk of exposure to a wider variety of intestinal parasites
If you have young children, potential exposure to parasite eggs in dog feces in your yard exists and some intestinal parasites of dogs can infect people
If your dog has ever had whipworms

We recommend using the heartworm preventive Interceptor monthly year round for heartworm and intestinal parasites prevention... the year round recommendation is new and based on a longer season of exposure to intestinal parasites than just heartworms.
If your dog does not fit the above risk factors, either Interceptor or HeartGard Plus seasonally (June to December) as we have done in the past is adequate.

Ticks: Springtime (March, April, May, and June) is when we see ticks and prevention with FrontLine Plus monthly is effective
Fleas: Summer and Fall (June to November) until a hard freeze is when we see fleas and Prevention with FrontLine Plus or Advantage monthly is effective
